Buterin took to Warpcast to discuss the recent transfers. There he said, “It’s not actually me selling; it’s almost always me donating to some charity, nonprofit, or other project, and the recipient selling because, well, they have to cover expenses.”

Additionally, Buterin made clear that he has sold ETH “for personal gain since 2018.” Alternatively, the statement has been verified by TrustNodes. Indeed, they reported that the $15 million sold was sent from Vitalik’s address, which belonged to a biotechnology charity he founded called Kanro.

Buterin currently has crypto holdings that are worth around $50 million. Moreover, the transfers had an unexpected impact on the Ethereum market when they were made public. Yet, the statement and clarification will likely calm many investors.

“Because if you stake your ETH, the keys that access it have to be public on a subsystem that is online. For safety, it has to be a Multisig. Multisig for staking is still fairly difficult to set up; it gets complicated in a bunch of ways.”

Speaking of the podcast, Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson shared his thoughts on Twitter. Hoskinson expressed his astonishment and found himself at a loss for words. Additionally, he emphasized that all of their ADA is staked, highlighting that this aligns with the intended design of a properly implemented Proof of Stake protocol.

The SEC filed two back-to-back lawsuits earlier this month against crypto exchanges Binance and Coinbase for allegedly violating U.S. securities laws. The cases managed to rock the entire industry.

As a part of the lawsuits, the regulator went on to declare several tokens as securities. In the Binance case, BNB, BUSD, SOL, ADA, MATIC, FIL, ATOM, SAND, MANA, ALGO, AXS, and COTI were victims. In the Coinbase lawsuit, the SEC specifically deemed SOL, ADA, MATIC, FIL, SAND, AXS, CHZ, FLOW, ICP, NEAR, VGX, DASH, and NEXO to be securities.

Several ripple effects did follow. Robinhood, for instance, ended support for Cardano, MATIC, and Solana on June 27. Even so, the community is earnestly looking forward to more clarity pertaining to crypto rules.

Commenting on U.S.’ policy approach w.r.t. crypto, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin recently tweeted,

“I feel bad that Solana and other projects are getting hit in this way. They don’t deserve it.”

A ‘fair outcome’ is the need of the hour

Ethereum, however, has managed to shield itself from regulators’ radar. This likely associated to the ‘Hinman‘ tangent. The internal e-mails written by the former SEC Director of Corporation Finance in 2018 pointed out that he did not see a need to regulate ETH as a security. That echoed his infamous speech from the same year. Back in the day, William Hinman had branded ETH as a non-security. This was because it was based on a “sufficiently decentralized” blockchain network.

Amid the current state of affairs, if Ethereum ends up winning, it wouldn’t be fair, according to Buterin. The Ethereum founder elaborated,

“If ethereum ends up “winning” through all other blockchains getting kicked off exchanges, that’s not an honorable way to win, and in the long term probably isn’t even a victory.“

Buterin further asserted that “the real competition” is not other chains, but “it’s the rapidly expanding centralized world that is imposing itself on us.” He wished all honorable projects a “fair outcome” in this whole situation.

Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin was the latest guest on Bankless. Bankless co-owner David Hoffman first asked Buterin to reflect on the past year and all the lessons learned in 2022. Buterin replied that 2022 was a complicated year. And indeed it was.

Although there were several negative “blowups,” the 28-year-old programmer believes it is essential to remember the positives. Buterin names Ethereum’s “merge” as one of the positives of 2022. The network’s transition to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus model was something the community worked on for many years. Buterin highlighted how the transition reduced Ethereum’s energy consumption by 99.9%.

Buterin also added that 2022 was the year of zkEVM. From being just a “pipe dream,” many zkEVM projects are promising mainnet launch by next year.

However, 2022 has not particularly been a good year for the financial sector, let alone cryptocurrencies. ETH has lost almost 60% of its value year-to-date. Although the “merge” was a technological achievement, it did little to help ETH’s price movement. Instead, many called the move a “sell the news.”

Ethereum co-founder speaks on 2023 opportunities

In response to Hoffman’s fear that the “adoption wave” for decentralized apps had ended, Buterin provided his predictions for the cryptocurrency market in 2023.

Firstly, Buterin said that the infrastructure for crypto wallets needs to improve. This will simplify use for regular people and ensure support to onboard billions of users.

Secondly, Buterin asserted the development of a globally usable stablecoin, immune to hyperinflation, would be a revolution in the sector. The stablecoin should hold up under any circumstance, both on-chain and in the larger macroeconomy.

Buterin stated that any technological advancements that help Ethereum usurp Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other centralized monopolies’ control over user logins will eventually help Ethereum gain more market share for web-based apps.

Buterin did note that, as a result of rising competition and the market’s maturing, the possibility to close gaps in the market was becoming less clear.

At press time, ETH was trading at $1,191.75, up by 1% in the last 24 hours. The asset is down by 75.2% from its all-time high of $4,878.26, attained on November 10th, 2021.
